The 1970s saw the administration of the University move from the Archdiocese of Halifax to a secular board. The Jesuits would stay as professors, but slowly decline in numbers. This transition was overseen by two Catholic Presidents, Owen Carrigan (1971-1977) and Kenneth Ozmon (1977-2000).1970: Bob Dawson, Percy Paris, and Darrell Maxwell form the first all-black line on a Canadian university hockey team.1972-73 & 1976-77 – Bob Boucher wins CIAU Men’s Hockey Coach of the year honours. ** This would in later years become known as the Fr. George Kehoe Memorial Award.1972-73 – Brian Heaney is the recipient of the CIAU Men’s Basketball Coach of the year Award.1973 – Kathy Mullane hired to lead Women’s Athletics at SMU. Initially women’s teams were classified as “club” teams before moving on to the status of a Varsity Sport.1973 – Men’s Basketball and Football teams claim CIAU Championships.1974-75 – Women’s Basketball becomes women’s first varsity designated sport.1978 & 1979 – Men’s Basketball Team win back to back CIAU Championships.
