Angelo Santucci joined the Football Huskies in 1971 and became an immediate impact player as a running back, superb blocker and timely contributor to special teams. After one particularly hard fought win, Coach Al Keith said, "He kept us in the game. When we really needed to keep the ball, we could always count on him." Chosen AUAA Rookie of the Year and first team All-Star, Santucci encored with an electrifying 105-yard punt return in his Atlantic Bowl debut. In 1972, after a solid start, "The Sophomore Sensation" was sidelined with a serious leg injury. He and his teammates returned with a vengeance the following year. After an impressive regular season, Santucci rushed for 186 years in leading the Huskies to the AUAA title. Following a breathtaking 19-17 upset win over Laurier at Huskies Stadium, team captain Santucci led the Huskies into C.N.E. stadium to face McGill. Huge efforts by the Huskies' defense and Ken Clark's trusty toe were rewarded when Santucci, Saint Mary's number one running back, raced into the end zone to wrap up the game and the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union Championship. AUAA leading rusher, All-Star, and MVP, Santucci was especially appreciated for the colour, character, durability and intangibles he brought to his team.
After leaving Saint Mary's, Angelo's career took him to the CFL where he played for 10 years. Angelo was a rookie Nominee in 1975 with the Hamilton Tiger Cats and Canadian of the Game in the Grey Cup of 1978. As a member of the Edmonton Eskimos, he was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 1998 for winning 5 Grey Cups in a row and was re-inducted in May of 2000 as the "Team of the Century".
